Warsaw - "We knew that this season would be difficult, but it is worse than we expected", says a Polish strawberry processor. Last week should have been a production peak but looking at the processing plants it is difficult to notice that, informs the Polish fruit portal www.sadownictwo.com.pl.

In previous years, lines of growers waiting with strawberries in front of processing plants was almost normal in Poland. This year business is brisk, but the atmosphere – very nervous – processing plants are waiting for raw material while they should be in the peak of processing season.

The first few days of the purchasing season were good with stable prices of strawberries. Now the volume of fruit is very small and also quality of strawberries is lower. The latter is a result of the extreme hot weather and showers during the last few weeks. Such weather favours infection by pathogens. Everything shows that the purchasing season for processing strawberries will finish very soon.
